In our fundraising and across our flexible support services, volunteers increase the quality of service that Autism East Midlands provides.
We recently introduced a new program across the region, our eight Family Support Hubs and having volunteers involved with our staff has brought new ideas and life skills to the development of the service.
Christine Saxon, Executive Assistant, commented:
Whilst volunteers should be respected for giving something back to the community, they should also be recognised for their on-going support to our work and we value their unstinting contribution to our ultimate aim of providing quality of life for autistic people across the East Midlands. We would encourage more people to look at our volunteering vacancies and help us to make a difference.
Volunteers assist AEM staff in our Flexible Day Support services providing vocational skills and employability support to people with autism. As well as helping to progress our service users towards independence and the ability to secure paid employment, this can also help our volunteers to build careers in care.
That is exactly what happened in the case of one of our volunteers, Georgie, who joined the project because of a personal interest in supporting people with autism, which she developed whilst studying health and social care in school.
She enjoyed her time as a volunteer and found working alongside our service users highly rewarding, so when an opportunity arose to join the AEM staff team as a casual relief worker, she jumped at the chance. As a casual relief member of the team she was in the frame to be interviewed when a permanent position arose.
She is now in a full-time, permanent position and has continued to develop her skills, taking on health & safety and fire marshalling responsibilities in her service.
Of her time with Autism East Midlands, Georgie says:
AEM is well-organised and friendly, and I enjoy my job. Before I started at AEM I wasn’t a confident person at all, however with lots of help from managers and staff I am now much more confident. I will take on any task offered to me and I would like to apply for a leadership role one day. My journey through this organisation has been excellent, the team are brilliant, and managers are always there when you need them to support you to progress. This has helped me a lot and is a great benefit to my future.
