We are a team of clinicians and therapists including Speech and Language Therapists, Specialist Applied Psychologists (Educational and Clinical), Assistant Psychologists and Therapy Assistants.
We work collaboratively with adult services, using person centred principles to promote an individual’s wellbeing and to enable them to access their residential and/or day service at Autism East Midlands. We offer a flexible consultancy and multi-disciplinary support service, working closely with managers and staff in services; support includes providing training, regular multi-disciplinary team meetings, outcome driven project work, direct and indirect interventions, basing ourselves firmly in good evidence based practice.
We work to promote positive behaviour support, including providing functional assessment, functional analysis and behaviour monitoring services. We focus on the function of behaviours and provide interventions that focus on positive behaviour change. We may also work one to one with individuals experiencing mental health issues as well as with the wider support teams, families and other professionals.
We provide training and support across all services in:
- Understanding autism including understanding about autism and learning disability
- Understanding and supporting communication for individuals with Autism
- Person Centred Thinking and Planning
- Intensive Interaction
- Positive Behaviour Support
- Augmented and Alternative Communication including Signing, use of Symbols and in the use of technology to support communication
- Independent functional skills and sensory needs
We work to promote a Total Communication Approach, including providing assessment and review of communication means, reasons and opportunities. Providing guidance and resources to support choice making, self advocacy and independent communication.
The Speech Therapy provision to our adults services follow the Royal College of Speech Therapy ‘Good Communication Guidelines’.
We work with members of the senior leadership team to support effective and positive change for individuals through service user voice. Including facilitating service user voice forums and supporting the involvement of ALL service users.
We help staff and services to develop and implement effective environmental strategies that can support people with autism to lead full and fulfilling lives within services that are both autism-specific and tailored to meet an individual’s needs.
